Born in Schönau, Baden-Württemberg, on the 28th of July 1837, Georg Adam Scheid began his apprenticeship in 1853 in Pforzheim and Stuttgart. In 1858 he joins Michael Markowitsch's studio in Vienna. In 1862, the studio changes its name to Markowitsch & Scheid, located on Sandwirtgasse 8 and later on Gumpendorfer Straße 83. In 1882, Scheid opens his own factory, G. A. Scheid. Markowitsch & Scheid was taken over by Adolf Markowitsch, one of Michael Markowitsch's sons. The company was closed down in 1898. The inscription "România Independentă" was executed by commission, following the victory in the Russo-Turkish War in the years 1877-1878 and the independence from the Ottoman Empire. As part of the gold and common metal collection of the Peleș National Museum, we find works by Georg Adam Scheid, among which we can notice a bone paper knife with a silver handle, which is perhaps a souvenir of the 50th wedding anniversary of King Carol I's parents, Prince Karl-Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Princess Josephina of Baden. "The paper knife belonging to King Carol I, part of the Peleș Castle heritage, was one of the Romanian sovereign's favourite objects. In 1927, an inventory of the Peleș Castle was carried out, with a document drafted by Constantin (Costică) Ștefanovici, the adoptive son of the Royal House's Czech architect, Karel Liman. In "The 1927 Peleș Castle Furniture and Art Objects Inventory", Ștefanovici mentions the presence of the paper knife in the work cabinet of King Carol I, by noting on the inventory pages "1 ivory knife with 2 lockets, for paper", evaluated at that time for 20 Lei. The presence of the paper knife on the Romanian sovereign's desk illustrates the attachment and love that the King nurtured for his parents." Corina Dumitrache, museographer, Peleș National Museum.
