Queen Marie's passion for painting was a happy completion of her literary talent, both of them appreciated by her contemporaries. The Queen painted especially during those times when she was still a Crown Princess of the Romanian Throne, and she got notably remarked thanks to her works depicting floral motifs, such as this one. The present work was very carefully painted, paying a special attention for details, which was typical for the Queen's style, as she was inspired by German popular wisdom, where the motto "Gegen Dummheit Kempfen Gotter selbst Vergebens" ("Gods Fight in Vain against Foolishness") is brilliantly illustrated by the future Queen.
