The icon is a feast which was part of the Feasts frieze of a Brâncovenesc iconostasis, where the main celebrations of the year are presented. The Crucifixion theme is thoroughly observed by the painter, and the composition is strictly proportionate. The scene takes place on the golden background of certain conventional walls, which suggest the city of Jerusalem. In the foreground, on the symmetry axis of the composition, lies the Cross with Jesus crucified. At the base of the Cross is suggested the tomb of Adam by the painting of His bones (glava Adama), which is, certainly, an allusion to the Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for washing away the sins of humankind. Jesus is rendered in nude, with a pagnus around his hips, and his death is mourned by angels in Heavens and on earth by the Weeping Mother of God, accompanied by Mary Magdalene, represented standing, on the left side of the composition; with the same attitude are painted, on the right side, St. John the Theologian and Longinus, the centurion. The traits of the characters' faces are executed according to the characteristics of the Brâncovenesc style, and their model is made by gradual superimpositions of ochre tones up to the shadow painted in dark brown. The chromatic, which is dominated by red and green, in several tones, vibrates on the icon's golden background, adding a note of pomp and pretentiousness, typical to the Brâncovenesc style. The inscriptions which designate the scene are painted with red Cyrillic letters.
