One of the most long-lasting representatives of surrealist painting, Jules Perahim will develop his art around an alternative world, in which the oneiric, timeless space, and the unreal become new mission statements and aspirations. A movement deflected into the area of visual arts and of literature between the two world wars, Surrealism is defined by André Breton in his manifesto (1924) as a means to unify the conscious and unconscious realms of experience, to such an extent that the world of dream and phantasy may join rational daily life in an absolute reality, which become surrealist. Having started his career very early, Jules Perahim would plunge into a genuine poetic adventure even as far back as the interwar years, becoming one of the main figures of Romanian surrealist avant-garde. His new approach addresses the spontaneous, which starts unexpectedly, being underpinned by the premise of renouncing any barrier or dogma which could interfere with the freedom of creation. The collaboration with the leftist magazines ("Viața imediată", "Unu", "Alge", "Cuvântul liber"), to which he contributes surrealist drawings, places young Perahim under the mark of a progressive position, influencing the continuity and the importance of the new movement with his activity. The year 1981 finds Perahim in France, where he settled as early as in 1969, in a tireless artistic activity, with numerous exhibitions at Tel Aviv, Saint-Nazare, Paris, or Lyon; at the same time, the year 1981 is the year in which the format of his canvases changes and the landscape makes an appearance, highlighted in works such as: "Flute Player", "Wanderer", "The Magnet" or "Flying Machine".
