The first journey that Dărăscu makes to the north of Italy, in Venice and Chioggia, occurred around 1910, during the same period when Gheorghe Petrașcu discovered lagoon vedutas. The artist thus initiated, like his generation colleague, the cycle that lasted over 25 years and depicted canals, lagoons, piazzas and bridges of Venice and Chioggia, a stage when his painting was modelled and acquired a definitive nature under the rule of colour. Between the wars, Dărăscu spent much of his summers visiting Italy, one of the most important trips being in 1926, an itinerary materialised one year later in the “Venice” exhibition that propelled him to the elite of landscape painters. This work is easily integrated in Dărăscu’s series of “Venices” and it also marks the materialisation of an unmistakeable style, profoundly influenced by the influence, chromatic and seascapes of the Italian city.
