The synthetic language that Corneliu Michăilescu’s painting conveyed around 1920 is proof of the multiple influences of the young painter. Attracted by the charm of symbolism, as well, translated into an Art Nouveau language (in the second half of last century’s second decade), the painter shaped a modernist plastic discourse in the second stage spent in Florence after World War I. Although the Avant-Garde infusion could not compare to the one discovered in the Romanian groups around “Contimporanul” magazine a few years later (1924), Michăilescu’s creation in the first years of the third decade vibrated and predicted more and more fervently his attraction for construction and cubism. This work offers information about the eclecticism that the pictorial manner of Michăilescu showed at the end of this first period of creation (1913-1922). The composition with characters in a landscape follows the classical criteria, but the plastic solution heralded a modernist language that would take over the artist’s style in the following period. Michăilescu was most likely in Techirghiol-Movilă, the stylish spa resort, for treatment, as his health had been damaged during the time spent in the prison camp of Tuchel (September 1916-1918).
