Suzani is a type of embroidered and highly decorative tribal textile, made in Uzbekistan. Suzani is from Persian "سوزن", "suzan", which means "needle". The art of making such textiles in Iran is called "سوزندوزی" "suzandozi" ("needlework"). Suzani tapestries usually have a base of cotton fabric (sometimes silk), which is embroidered with silk thread. The main points used are chain, satin and buttonhole. The couching technique is also widely used; this technique also uses the decorative thread placed on the fabric as an embossed line and is sewn with a second thread. Suzani creations are often made into two or more pieces, which are then sewn together. Some popular motifs include solar and moon disks, flowers (especially tulips, carnations and irises), leaves and vines, fruits (especially pomegranates) and, occasionally, fish and birds.
