Gifted with a clear mastery of the pen in the register of light and colour, Paul Miracovici makes his debut as a portraitist, demonstrating a particular attention to portraying the human being on canvas. Shortly after the graduation of the National School of Fine Arts, he participates at the Official Salon exhibition with a self-portrait. The next year, he exhibits three compositions on the Salon's supports dedicated to the characters, and in 1927 he presents the audience the present work, under the title "Biblical". All these participations will be rewarded with compliments from critics of the time. He will also receive a "travel scholarship" which will finance his studies realized in the capital of France. In Paris, he visits museums and is enchanted by the Italian Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age. He discovers Vermeer van Delft, Corot or Braque, from whose work he will better understand the role of light and colour in painting. He will also unravel the mysteries of construction and the rigour of form through the creations of Matisse or Cezanne. The starting chromatic palette, based on sober, dark tones, in which the expressive force of light is felt, will gradually be replaced by much brighter and lighter shades. We identify, in this first period, attempts to trace a pictorial language marked by reminiscences of academic realism. In the stage in which he defines his personal plastic semantic, we see a lyrical expression of reality, particularly in seascapes. With a rich work in monumental art, Paul Miracovici will add the decorative effects of mural painting to his mural painting. He will become master of forms and will work with wide touch-lines, thus conveying pure emotion.
