The maturity work of Alexandru Ciucurencu, known for its vivid, exuberant chromatic, will debut in a strident contrast in comparison to the works from his first creation period, profoundly influenced by the brown nuances promoted by his teacher, G.D. Mirea. In the summers spent in Baia Mare, Ciucurencu declares himself surprised by the expressive palette of the painters from Maramureș and amazed by the chromatic juxtapositions they propose. In 1930, the artist leaves behind the native lands and heads to Paris. The fervour of one of the most renowned European artistic capitals of the last century definitely broadens his imaginary horizon and offers him new possibilities of plastic expression. In capital of France, Ciucurencu discovers Hieronymus Bosch, Boticelli, Matisse, Picasso, Braque or Cézanne. The contact with Paris is, in addition to the Romanian painter's encounter with universal art, the acquisition of a more significant pictorial refinement. His works always begin in the reality, regardless of the manner in which they end up being created. He takes, in much diminished quantities, from Cézanne's cubism, and from Matisse he will assume the value of line and colour in his work. As the successor of Post-Impressionism, he takes on some of the traits associated with this movement: The colour's autonomy and the use of vivid nuances, but he does not shy away from introducing black into his works. The ability of the drawer is revealed to us especially in the contours through which the artist defines the subjects represented. Ciucurescu masters with the perfect science of matching lines and harmonising colours. Often described as a "colourist", Alexandru Ciucurencu considers himself a follower of painters who also paid particular attention to colour: Luchian, Ressu, Lhote and Pallady. He knows to work with the set of values which he gets under the guidance of André Lhote: gradually distributes light, following the logic of reality and masterfully distributes chromatic effects. Ciucurencu will excel especially in still life. In this pictorial genre, the artist will remain known for his predilection for warm and intense tones, the knowledge of melodic organization of the composition and the possibility of rendering chromatic combinations in lyrical rhythms.
