With a work created around the theme of nature, Theodor Pallady imposes himself in the Romanian art through the affective content proposed by the natural setting of his canvases. His establishment in France, in 1889, will have a great influence on his evolution and artistic journey. Having the chance to develop in a rich and complex cultural environment, as the Paris of the last century, Pallady will get to assimilate, gradually, the great artistic currents proposed by his predecessors in search and perfection of his own pictorial manner. The appetite for the landscape, especially the urban landscape, develops with the artist's numerous trips abroad. He usually paints in his workshop, placed near the banks of the Seine, in Place Dauphine. He captures the grey atmosphere of Paris and gives the colour the title of interpreter of the soul's states. The passion for autumn colours and the gloomy atmosphere is transposed in the grey skies and the greys in nature reflected in the water's edge. Pallady proves a unique refinement through the integration of certain clear, bright rhythms in the twilight atmosphere of the city. In his works, the colour is irretrievably linked to the properties of line and drawing. The artist offers a particular attention to the construction of the composition: he harmonises shapes and volumes and achieves chromatic balance through the careful selection of tones. The poetry and mystery of his work is revealed by the soft transparencies dedicated to the Place Dauphine frescoes. Carefully crafted with meticulous detail, Pallady's landscapes retain the documentary character of the period in which they were made. The temptation to perfect true works of art exposes the analytical spirit and power of synthesis of the creator. The illustrated space receives, through the plastic language used, a transfer of vital sensitivity. The landscape - a constant in Pallady's work - understood as a subjective interpretation of the places the artist has been in, reveals us spaces in the country, from Bucium, where he lived when he returned to the Moldova area, or expanses abroad, Parisian or Provençal views. The most valuable of his stays are in oil and reveal the artist's preference for broad perspectives and the water motif. Painting of honesty, Pallady's work has a schematism of essential characteristic and enhances the enigmatic atmosphere of urban landscapes.
