A harmoniser of shapes translated through colour, painter Nicolae Tonitza conducts a close study of nature, which will always prove itself interesting and instructive. For a thorough understanding of the language of painting, the artist prefers the free study of nature in the summertime, when colour flows freely and brightly on the shapes. In the middle of nature, he would discover flowers, which appear in his repertoire starting from the 1920s. One of the first exhibitions where we notice flowers is the joint exhibition "N.N. Tonitza – Ștefan Dimitrescu", in January-February 1920, within which the artist was bound to present several flower compositions. We can also notice a fertile presence of flowers around the years 1935-1937 when, for three summers in a row, the painter was at the Durău Skete (Neamț), where he practices encaustic painting, along with his students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Iași. In addition to the works completed here, the artist also dedicates his spare time to the study of flowers. The result of these studies can be admired in the exhibitions by "Grupul celor patru", as well as in personal exhibitions, where the artist would display a significant number of compositions and flower panels.
