107. Icon on glass, "Baptism of the Lord", workshop in Nicula, mid 19th century

Identification elements of an iconographic and stylistic order: The icon's painting depicts the scene of the Lord's Baptism, simplifying it to essential characters. Against the dark background of the icon, in the center of the composition, Jesus Christ is portrayed standing, naked, with his hands on his chest, receiving baptism from Saint John the Baptist, standing on the left bank of the Jordan, and on the right bank an angel is holding a mantle to cover him. Above Jesus' head, in the open sky, the Holy Spirit dove descends. On three sides, the field of the icon is decorated with red roses. The painting of the icon (portrayal of characters and their clothes) is marked by strong graphics, with colors applied in large, unvalued spots, dominated by red and ochre in several shades. Technical identification elements: The icon painting is executed in tempera on glaze. The gilted frame of the icon and the wooden lid are original. Conclusions: The icon's painting, in terms of stylistic and technical execution, fits into the characteristics of the Nicula painting school, still retaining its aesthetic coordinates (A.D.).
