Joining the inner circle of collector Alexandru Bogdan-Pitești had placed Camil Ressu in the privileged group of artists who had the chance to work, every summer, in Vlaici. Initially, he conducted studies and sketches that he later translated into oil on canvas. He surpassed the precepts of the academicism obtained during the few months spent in Munich and built his own plastic semantics, eloquent and well consolidated. He consistently returns to Vlaici, his existence becoming divided over time between the uniformity of urban life and the fertile experiences offered by rural life. He used his direct contact with the peasantry to develop a deeply subjective vision. The artist insisted on delving deeper into the psychology of the characters portrayed, initiating discussions and insisting on knowing his models. In this way, he identified the true aspects of rural life, which he also represented in works that no longer focussed on defining the characters. The artist organized his compositions horizontally, creating true frescoes of the villages in Olt, Moldova, Vrancea or Transylvania. He composes balanced, keeps real proportions; he constructs his design meticulously and subjects color to it. He used a predominantly linear rhythm and a bright chromatic in an attempt to underline the dominant elements in his works. The artist's works exemplify the life, work, and customs of the rustic world, but sometimes reveal moments of rest. In his landscapes, Camil Ressu focuses mainly on the picturesque nature, sketching sinuous contours of trees and hills, but also captures the beauty of rural houses with white walls and colorful roofs. The stark realism that Ressu adopts mainly reveals itself in the cold tones bathed in sunlight, in the wide surfaces of lights and shadows, and in the truthful rendition of volumes and rhythms.
