Ion N. Manolescu-Struna was a Romanian liberal politician. He studied economy in Wien and then obtained his PhD at the University of Berlin. Manolescu-Strunga was Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture from 1933 to 1934, and again in 1936. He was also Minister of Industry and Commerce from October 5, 1934 to August 1, 1935, and Minister Secretary of State from November 17, 1937 to December 28, 1937. He dealt with economic issues, writing a series of works such as: "Ãn preajma reformelor" ("On the eve of the reforms"), 1919; "Organizarea comerÈului de produse alimentare" ("Organization of the Food Trade"), 1925; "Impozitele pe veniturile propietarilor agricoli" ("Taxes on the incomes of agricultural proprietors"), 1933; "Problema agriculturii noastre" ("The Problem of Our Agriculture"), 1933 and "Politica guvernului în economia fructelor" ("Government Policy on the Fruit Economy"), 1934. He was arrested under the communist regime on May 6, 1950. He was sentenced to two years of hard labour and sent to Sighet prison, where he died on April 19, 1951. After his death, widow Irina Manolescu-Strunga, (born Filotti), was also arrested and sentenced to Gherla and Mislea prisons for two years. Ion Manolescu-Strunga had a daughter, Gina, who married Nicolae Cocea with whom she had a girl Ioana-Maria, known as the sculptor Maria Cocea.
PODRIJETLO
The icon was part of the collection of the politician Ion Manolescu-Strunga who, most likely acquired in the 1920s and 1930s and confiscated by the Communist regime in 1950 following the collector's arrest. From 1950 till 2022, it was part of the patrimony of Bucharest Museum. In January 2023, the icon was returned to the family.
