In the last months of the First World War, the Bolshevik revolution broke out in Hungary led by Bela Kun, who had returned to his homeland after participating in the Bolshevik revolution in Russia with money and weapons from the Soviets. In November 1918, unrest organised by the Hungarian Communist Party prompted the powers of Entente to think of a solution to prevent the spread of communism in Europe. In March 1919, following a coup d'état, the Hungarian communists seized power with the help of Soviet paramilitary formations. Under these conditions, the reconcentrated Romanian army received the approval of the Allied powers to intervene in Hungary to liquidate the Bolshevik revolution. After several victorious clashes, the Romanian army entered Budapest in August 1919. The two armies that acted against the Bolshevik troops were the "Northern Group", under the command of General Traian Moșoiu, later appointed military governor of the Hungarian territories west of the Tisa, and the "Southern Group", commanded by General Gheorghe Mărdărescu. The latter appears in this photo, in the front row, in the middle, between two other officers and next to soldiers of the "Beiuș" Regiment of Transylvanian Romanian soldiers, in the centre of the Hungarian capital.
