53. Are You Leaving or Staying?

Francisc Chiuariu belongs to the generation of Bucharest artists formed in the 90s, under the guidance of artist and teacher Florin Ciubotaru. In 2012 he had, simultaneously, three solo events, at AnnArt Gallery, Palatele Brâncovenești Mogoșoaia and National Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest. In 2011 he participated in the Moscow Biennial, in a project that subsequently travelled to Tel Aviv and Paris, then in the exhibition Post Humanism at the V-Art Gallery, Moscow, and in 2012 he was included in the Liverpool Biennial and in the group exhibition The Essences of Reality at the Várfok Gallery in Budapest. The unique character of the "Pleci sau rămâi?" ("Are you leaving or staying?") series is a female silhouette, obsessively reworked in each work and transposed into various urban settings. The matrix of this female figure has been articulated in Francis's plastic discourse since the "Teoria cercului" ("Theory of the Circle") series. This work, at the transition, the boundary between the two series, focuses on capturing and depicting in detailed, sequential detail a little girl's fascinating play with her circle. Subtly, angel wings are projected onto the character, suggesting the hope and innocence of age.
