Obverse legend: STEP▪D▪G▪REX▪PO▪D▪L Obverse description: In the centre, the bust of King Stephen Bathory with a short beard, wearing a modern closed crown, ornamented with globules and fleur-de-lis elements. He is dressed in a cuirass, with only the upper part visible. Reverse legend: III / 15 - 86 / GR - OS / ARG ▪ TRIP▪ / CIVI ▪ RI ▪ / +GE+ Reverse description: Legend arranged linearly on six rows. The second and third rows are interrupted by the representation of a city gate (Riga), with a frontal depiction of a lion's head at the entrance and in the upper part, two crossed keys surmounted by a cross (the blazon of the city Riga). At the top, two stylized lily flowers. Catalog reference: Parchimowicz-Brzeziński 221.a2. This is an illustrative piece for the monetary activity of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, which will become in terms of iconography and metrology the basic emission of the monetary system during the reign of King Sigismund III Vasa. With its exceptional artistic and stylistic quality, the piece stands out through an original iconography for this period, which will become a reference.
