Obverse legend: MON*TRAN IL SIGI*B*D*S / 15 84 Obverse description: In the center, Saint Ladislau standing, wearing an open crown and armor, interrupts the legend at the top once and at the bottom twice. In his right hand he holds a halberd, and in his left hand a globe cruciger. Reverse legend: *PATRONA* [mint sign] *VNGARIE* Reverse description: In the center, the crowned Madonna is represented frontally, standing on a backless throne, with the Infant in her arms. Supported by a crescent with the corners pointing upwards. The Virgin's crown interrupts the legend at the top. At the bottom, in the area of the legend, the coat of arms of Sibiu - two crossed swords surmounted by an open crown, with three fleurons. Catalog reference: Romanian coins and banknotes (MBR), no. 334. The coin is a relevant historical document for understanding the coinage activity in Transylvania at the end of the sixteenth century, in a context marked by political instability and the fragility of princely authority. It is a special piece that illustrates the assimilation of Renaissance stylistic features in Transylvanian coinage art, as well as the preservation of the recognizable iconographic elements of Hungarian coinage, common in local circulation.
