Established by King Carol I on March 23, 1878 to reward the actions of the military, and some civilians during the War of Independence, the "Crossing of the Danube" commemorative Cross could include attached to its red ribbon with black stripes and the ribbon "Tradition", later created by King Carol II to allow military descendants, active or reserve officers, to keep wearing the decoration. The double cross is made of black steel and includes the inscription "Crossing of the Danube", in the central lozenge, on the obverse, next to the year of the war, 1877, and on the reverse King Carol I's cipher.
