When World War II broke out in Europe, the American soldiers were still equipped with the 1917 Model -1917 A1 helmet, copied entirely from the British model. In 1940, with World War II raging in Europe and Asia, it seemed likely that the United States would soon be at war again. The Infantry Council searched to create a better helmet because the ongoing conflict showed that the Model from 1917, designed to protect people sitting in trenches from splinters and shell shrapnel, would be inappropriate on a modern battlefield. The American army decided in 1941 to change the helmets of its soldiers and the production of the metal helmet M1 begins. The latter is then composed of two distinct parts: an external part of steel-carbon-manganese, heavy and olive Drab, and an inner part called liner, much lighter, made of vulcanized fibre
