The design of this sofa was born in 1972, when the artist collaborated with architect Oscar Tusquets for the Mae West room of the Dali museum in Figueras. The eponymous work, dedicated to the American actress and singer Mae West, was created in 1935, when the artist, inspired by a picture of the lead found in a newspaper, conceptualized a mixed-media piece that combined various elements. Starting again from a Freudian theory, Salvador Dali will represent the woman as a welcoming and warm space - an ideal room/ an idealized room. Thus, he will transform the actress's face into a real apartment, proposing decorative motifs as elements of the face. Fascinated by his own creation, he would later transpose the concept on a much larger scale, creating the "Mae West" room in his museum in Figueras. The lips would take the shape of an intense red sofa, while the nose would become a fireplace, the eyes would present themselves as abstract paintings, and the blonde wig would become a huge curtain. However, the lips would remain the central element of the room. Being inspired by both the actress's real personality, and the architecture of Gaudi or even fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, they would become a symbol in the XX century avant-garde.
