An opulent gilded bronze fireplace garniture, attributed to the famous French sculptor Mathurin Moreau (1822–1912), embodies the refined allegorical and decorative tendencies of the late Second Empire and early Belle Époque period. Cast in fine gilded bronze, the ensemble is anchored by a lyrical composition of two nymphs and a putto, rendered with grace, sensuality, and a masterful attention to anatomical form. The nymphs positioned centrally in contrapposto, appear to emerge from the gilded structure itself – figures that are both decorative and sculptural, suspended between function and allegory. Draped in flowing classical robes that cling to their figures with fluid naturalism, the nymphs embody the idealized femininity of 19th-century academic sculpture, while the playful putto adds a note of lightness and pastoral innocence. The figures are surrounded by Rococo-inspired foliate scrolls, vegetal motifs, and finely rendered details, further accentuating the ornamented theatricality of the piece.
