The copy is complete. The first volume has VIII + 382 pages, and the second
volume: (1) sheet + 362 pages. The binding of both volumes is uniform, being wrought in cardboard boards,
wrapped in marbled paper, and the book spine is made of cloth, with the title: "Engel Allgemeine
Welthistorie". The beginning of the first volume contains two engravings, made at Vienna, by San.
Czetter Hungarus and Oretter, in the year 1798. At the top of the preface, an illustration with the
portrait of Vlad Țepeș was placed. The beginning of the second part also contains an engraving, with the portraits
of Joseph II, Leopold II, Franz II and Wilhelm II.
Contents: Johan Christian Engel, a clerk at the aulic chancellery in Vienna, historian, author of
several writings on universal history, particularly on Europe. Along Sulzer, Macai, and
Endel, J.Ch. Engel is considered a precursor of Roessler’s theory, a concept according to which
the Romanian people and language were formed to the South of the Danube, and the area North of the Danube became a
"terra deserta", a territory that remained uninhabited, just right for occupation by the Hungarian barbarian tribes
coming from Asia. The Austrian historian presented these ideas in his work Fortsezung der allgemeinen
Welthistoire durch eine Gessellscahft von Gelehrten in Deutschland und England ausgeferigel.
This writing, Geschichte der Moldau und Valachen was printed in two
volumes, in the year1804 at Halle. The volumes, in-4o format, total VIII + 382 + 362
pages. The book had Joseph Beresevich as reviewer or as censor. In the first volume, based on a
historical biography, he presents static data regarding Moldova and Wallachia, at the origin
of the Romanian feudal states, their affirmation and, obviously, the fights with the Turks. In the second part, he refers to the
modern history of such territories until his time, to the inhabitants’ material and cultural life Currently,
the two volumes bear no ownership or reader’s marks. It is only on the title page
that a seal with a crown and the initials G.P. are present.
