The Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius (1588-1664) took over and developed the ‘The Atlas’ published by Gerard Mercator before him, helped by his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius with whom he worked on several maps. In the end, in 1638, ‘Noul Atlas’ (The New Atlas) appeared in the Mercator/Janssonius/Hondius edition, a work that was widely distributed in Europe. This piece, inspired by the work of Mercator, was printed in Amsterdam in 1628. Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting.
