The Qianlong period (1736-1795) was named after the Chinese emperor Hongli, who adopted the name of Qianlong, member of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). This period is considered the most flourishing of the Qing era, with military victories and territorial expansion, as well as important cultural achievements. A fine connoisseur of Chinese culture, the emperor enriched the imperial collection with new acquisitions, he commissioned painting and various artifacts to foreign and Chinese artists (thus encouraging local production), while also collecting ancient Chinese pieces. Thanks to its great interest in traditional Chinese art, calligraphy and poetry, Qianlong art is defined by diversity and experiment.
