"Georgi Bozhilov-Slona was born in 1935 in Plovdiv. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Fine Arts "Nikolay Pavlovich" (NHA) in 1959 with a specialty in decorative-monumental painting in the class of Prof. Georgi Bogdanov. Besides Prof. Bogdanov, another artist and teacher who had a huge influence on the formation of Bozhilov's distinctive style was Prof. Kiril Tsonev. This can be seen most clearly in the portraits of Slona, which are reminiscent of Tsonev's in style, feeling and color. One of the first creative Georgi Bozhilov's success is his participation in the first international biennial of young artists in Paris in 1959. The French newspaper Arts commented on his appearance in the biennial: "Unadulterated truth, intimacy and elegance". In Bulgaria he became known as "the most delicate painter in our country" and his work is defined as "light and feelings in color". Bozhilov is part of the "Plovdiv School of the 1960s" together with artists such as Encho Pironkov, Dimitar Kirov, Ioan Leviev, Hristo Stefanov and Georgi Boyadzhiev-Boyadjana. During his lifetime, Georgi Bojilov-Slona had over 25 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. He is a winner of the SBH award (1964) and an honored artist (1979). Slona works in the field of easel painting, genre portraiture, landscape and figurative composition. But he also creates applied works such as murals, mosaics and sgraffito. The most frequently used techniques by the artist are oil paints and collage techniques. His early work is mainly related to urban compositions and landscapes. He painted the markets and revival houses of his native Plovdiv and Tarnovo. In the 1970s, he championed the genre of still life, and made monumental works for public orders. During the same period, his most famous portraits of intellectuals close to him also appeared, including those of the actress Katya Paskaleva, who is also his wife, as well as the artist Rafael Mihailov, the director Krikor Azarian and others. Georgi Bojilov's attitude towards the interior and decoration is also characteristic of the period. Interweaving influences from the Secession and the collage technique are noticeable. After this period of relative realism in Bozhilov's works, he finally immersed himself in the style of abstractionism. He turns to philosophy, music and other forms of art that allow him to develop in a huge range and go beyond the flat and traditional. This is evident in the play with form and color in his canvases. The movements of the brush that layer the paint, the scratches that take it away form an emotional and expressive feeling that gives movement to the forms close to those of musical notes. This technique of Slona became known as the "jazz step", after the names of his works from 1982 - 1989: "Music", "Jazz" and "Music in blue".
The artist's affinity for the philosophy of antiquity is strongly represented in his works "City" and "Houses" from the mid-1970s. The words of the author unfold in them: "I see abstractly and think metaphysically". The strong geometrization, the bright contrast in colors and the rhythmic step accompany the works. In the same way, the painting "Old Plovdiv" expresses quite precisely this part of Slona's philosophy: "I love people of exact sciences: mathematicians, physicists... I like to observe the movement of plasma under a microscope, it makes me think about the meaning of being and the inner form structure”.
In the presented work, geometric shapes alternate, which seem to climb and move on the dense, brown background of the canvas. The oil paint is laid thickly and is taken away in places, thus forming forms and reliefs similar to those in the above-mentioned works "Houses" and "City". (S.Ya.)"
