The year 2024 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of the artist Georgi Papazov, known as Georges Papazov. The art gallery in his hometown of Yambol proudly bears his name. Even today, his work is of great interest to collectors and state museums. He is a recognized member of the international Paris school, along with Jules Pascin. Georges Papazov has no systematic academic art education. He attended the Engineering and Technical School for Architects and Park Planners in Prague from 1913 to 1918. In 1918 he attended a private painting school of Hans Hoffman in Munich. He lived in Berlin from 1921 to 1923, where he had his first contacts with major contemporary artists. In 1924 he settled in Paris. Georges Papazov is one of the forerunners of abstract surrealism. He remained an unorganized member of the Surrealist movement, although he was one of its forerunners and among its most prominent representatives. In the early period of his work, from 1924 to 1929, Papazov managed to create a unique imagery dictated by the artist's subconscious. He participated in the first group shows of the Surrealists in Paris in 1925 alongside Hans Arp, Max Ernst, Paul Klee, André Masson, Juan Miró and others. In the second period, from 1930 to 1950, he worked with geometric shapes - triangles and cones, which are allegories of the human soul. In his mature work, the artist returns to figurative painting. His artistic heritage fits into the surrealist trend and is an innovative contribution to modern art. Throughout his life, Georges Papazov remained strongly connected to Bulgaria, where he organized four solo exhibitions in 1919, 1928, 1934 and 1935. He died in Vance, France in 1972. The painting "Surrealistic Portrait", 1928, is chronologically classified as the first period of the author's work. In the same year, he presented two solo exhibitions - at the "Jeanne Buchet" gallery in Paris and at the "Gallery of the 6" in Sofia, which is a charity for the victims of the Chirpan earthquake. It is possible that the painting participated in one of these exhibitions. This artwork is a surreaistl portrait, representative for the style of the author. It incorporates some of the most characteristic elements such as a human face and cones, making it an emblematic artwork of Georges Papazoff from his most representative period of his creation. He is also the author of autobiographical books: Pascin! Pascin! C’est moi! (Paris, 1932) Drenov frères. (Paris, 1951) Derain, mon copain (Paris, 1960) Lettres a Derain (Paris, 1966) Pope Vassil. (Paris, 1968) Sur les pas du peintre. Suivi de documents et témoignages. (Paris, 1971) (S.N.)
